Community Initiatives
It is critical for as many South Africans as possible to actively participate in activities aimed at preserving our planet for future generations. MultiChoice supports environmental sustainability initiatives – with a specific focus on programmes that facilitate the much needed access to water resources as well as those that enable the creation of green spaces in needy communities.
Access to water and improved nutrition
In the past year, MultiChoice has funded the installation of a number of Roundabout Playpumps at schools in various provinces. The PlayPump Water System uses the energy of children at play to operate device that pumps underground water into a tank above ground. The water sources are scientifically tested to ensure fitness for human consumption.
Part of this programme includes the sponsorship of food gardens- where the water generated by the PlayPump is used for establishing a food garden which creates opportunities for schools to improve their feeding schemes and at times provide income generation opportunities.
Greening in low-income communities
Another key initiative in this sector is the contribution towards urban greening in the country. MultiChoice has already provided 5000 trees for low income households and community facilities nationally and plans to do even more in this space.
Both the water and the trees initiatives are multi-faceted in that they include education workshops as well as general awareness for beneficiary communities.
