MultiChoice equips selected schools with multimedia centres
The multimedia centres consist of brand new computers, television sets, video recorders, satellite decoders and dishes. Teachers are trained in ICT usage, a skill set that incorporates television content into everyday teaching and learning. Sustainability workshops are also run at the selected schools to assist the teachers and school management to reap long-term benefits from the facilities.
The initiative is run in partnership with MEC's for Education in the various provinces. The aim is to assist three top performing schools per province - a target of 27 schools across South Africa. As of April 2010, 15 schools in Limpopo, Gauteng, the North West, KwaZulu Natal and the Western Cape have benefited from this initiative.
This initiative makes it possible for the selected schools to use ICT to enhance learning, equipping learners to cope better in technologically-driven society. Schools are provided access to the DStv educational bouquet; comprising of Mindset Learn, Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, BBC World, SABC Africa, The History Channel and Animal Planet. The Mindset Learn channel includes curriculum-relevant educational material and resources for teachers.
To ensure that these multimedia laboratories would be effectively used, MultiChoice commissioned SchoolNet SA to offer training to teachers.
ICT Skills for Teachers is a Microsoft Partners Learning Course, which aims to provide teachers with their initial computer confidence. The learning methodology is based on just-in-time learning and adult learning principles. It ensures that teachers learn all the necessary skills they require to use applications software such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, email and internet.
ONE STEP FURTHER, on the other hand, is offered to teachers who have had some time to acquire and use basic computer skills. It aims to empower teachers with the skills to integrate ICT across the curriculum, with the ultimate aim of improving the way learning happens.
