MultiChoice assists orphaned and vulnerable children.

MultiChoice handed over a brand new furnished building to the Fanang Diatla Qwabe Children’s center in Limpopo and the Limpopo Department of Health and Social Development.

The MultiChoice Orphaned and Vulnerable Children’s initiative is one of the company’s Corporate Social Investment projects and aims to provide a holistic package of services to orphaned and vulnerable children in residential care.

Services Offered:
The services include training care givers on the management of the center, renovating and upgrading the infrastructure and help to prepare older children for independent living.

The Fanang Diatla Qwabe children’s center was selected by the Limpopo Department of Health and Social Development to receive support from MultiChoice.

The center did not have a facility to care for the children but owned a piece of land, which was donated to it by Kgoshi Mmalegodi Mathabatha. MultiChoice then decided it would be best to build a home for these children.

The Fanang Diatla Qwabe Children’s Centre is situated in GaMathabathe Village, Lekgwareng, a rural settlement situated 60km outside of Polokwane.

“Because Fanang Diatla is in an impoverished area with limited access to proper municipal services and where poverty levels are high, MultiChoice felt it was a worthy choice for its orphaned and vulnerable children’s initiative project,’ comments Jackie Rakitla General Manager of Corporate Affairs for MultiChoice South Africa.

The project has provided a haven for over 1000 orphaned and vulnerable children between ages of 6 and 20 years. These children are accessing services from the centre because of neglect, abuse and abandonment; while a further 20 children are being accommodated at the centre.

The MultiChoice Corporate Social Investment
The MultiChoice orphaned and vulnerable children’s initiative aims to assist as many centers as is possible, at least one in each province. The current number of centers that has benefited from this initiative are Fanang Diatla in Limpopo, Moepathutse in Gauteng, Ikaya Lenjabulo in Gauteng and Baphumelele in Khayelitsha.

MultiChoice’s CSI also focuses on education, where it provides Multimedia labs to schools from previously disadvantaged communities. Three high schools’ in Limpopo received Multimedia labs from MultiChoice and these are Harry Oppenhemeir, Bopedi bapedi and Moreko.

“Our CSI strategy”, says Rakitla, “is underpinned by the need to make a sustainable and lasting impact in communities within which we operate. MultiChoice believes that through direct technology investments and support, the company enables individuals and communities to help themselves, thereby minimizing dependence.
